About Three Tree Hill

Three Tree Hill sits on a working cattle farm in the Drakensberg foothills, looking across the Mfazimnyama valley to Spioenkop Game Reserve. The lodge was built in 1999 by historian David Rattray and his business partner Andrew Ardington, below the hill where the Battle of Spioenkop was fought in January 1900. Nine wood-and-iron cottages follow the colonial kit houses of that period. Simon and Cheryl Blackburn, both qualified guides, have run the lodge since 2007.

The rate is full board: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and a set three-course dinner, with ingredients grown on site or sourced nearby. There are no game drives. The neighbouring reserve is explored on foot, on pre-booked walks among white rhino, giraffe, and eland, while marked farm and birding trails leave from the cottages. The lodge is Fair Trade Tourism certified, employs its staff from Hambrook village, and supports the Sakhile Centre of Learning through its foundation.

The lodge takes its name from the small hill behind it, which served as General Sir Charles Warren's headquarters during the Spioenkop campaign. Andrew Ardington, whose grandfather served through the siege of Ladysmith, created the lodge in partnership with David Rattray of Fugitives' Drift. The flagship half-day Spioenkop tour spends four hours on the battlefield with a picnic lunch, tracing the January 1900 battle in which, as the lodge tells it, Louis Botha, Winston Churchill, and Mohandas Gandhi all played a role.

Accommodation is nine free-standing cottages: six doubles and three two-bedroom family cottages, built in wood and iron after the housing kits Britain shipped to the colony in the nineteenth century. Interiors carry the period through sash windows, writing desks, and hand-embroidered linen with the lodge's aloe motif. Children of all ages are welcome, there are no televisions, and the Kiplings cottage includes a wheelchair-friendly bathroom.

Meals are plated rather than buffet. Dinner is a set menu of three farm-style courses; lunch runs to salads, homemade bread, artisan cheeses, and cold meats. An underground cellar holds a selection of South African wines, and the bar carries thirty South African craft gins.

The reserve next door is experienced on foot. Pre-booked game walks with resident guides take a maximum of eight guests into Spioenkop Game Reserve for ninety minutes to two hours among white rhino, giraffe, zebra, and eland. On the farm, marked walking routes of two to nine kilometres and twenty-five kilometres of birding trails, with 280 species recorded within walking distance, are free to use, and a guide for the farm trails can be arranged at no charge.

Three Tree Hill is Fair Trade Tourism certified, and its staff are employed from neighbouring Hambrook village. Through its foundation the lodge supports the Sakhile Centre of Learning and runs a small-business incubator; crafts made by village women are sold at the lodge. The library, with more than 3,000 books, is named for Molly Blackburn, Simon's mother, an anti-apartheid activist in the Black Sash movement.
