About Sungulwane Private Game Lodge

Sungulwane Private Game Lodge stands on a hilltop overlooking Zuka Private Game Reserve, part of the Munywana Conservancy in northern Zululand. The Morrison family has lived on this land for four generations. The family farm dropped its fences and joined the conservancy in 2018, and what began as an old hunting camp reopened as a privately owned boutique lodge in late 2021 — brothers Rob and Nick, with their cousin Mark, run it day to day.

Eight suites sit raised into the red ivory forest — six luxury suites and two family suites. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open each suite to the valley below. The nightly rate covers all meals, twice-daily game drives, house drinks, and Wi-Fi. The conservancy holds the Big Five, a notable cheetah population, and more than 430 recorded bird species across six biomes. Chefs cook with locally sourced ingredients, and dinner often moves to a lantern-lit boma.

The land carries a longer story than the lodge. Zuka Private Game Reserve joined the Munywana Conservancy in 2004, and the conservancy was declared a protected nature reserve in September 2019. The Sungulwane farm dropped its fences in 2018, folding four generations of Morrison family land into a single open system of grassveld, woodland, thicket, and savanna on the western slopes of the Lebombo mountains.

The conservancy's conservation record runs deep. It was the first private reserve in South Africa selected to receive black rhino, and large-tusked elephant genes from Tembe strengthen the local population. Guests can join a rhino notching or dehorning as a paid conservation experience, arranged in advance and subject to the reserve's operational schedule. The lodge also runs a beekeeping programme to support indigenous pollinators.

Local artisans built the lodge, and the design leans on contemporary African forms and organic textures. Each luxury suite carries a king or twin bed, indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning, and a private veranda facing the valley. The two family suites add a second twin room and a bathtub, and take two adults with two children under fourteen.

Days follow the safari rhythm: a morning drive, time at the lodge, an afternoon drive into dusk. Guided bush walks run for small groups at extra cost, and a ground-level photographic hide takes up to six guests at a time. Birders look for the African Broadbill, the Pink-throated Twinspot, and the Gorgeous Bushshrike among more than 430 recorded species. The team is drawn from surrounding Zululand communities.

The name comes from the Zulu for 'the view of the eye', and the hilltop position explains it. The lodge sits near Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal, roughly three and a half hours' drive from Durban. The conservancy borders the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site.
